Reuse & Education Specialist - Baltimore, MD  

32+ hours/week  
Up to 40 hours/week during peak Education Programming and as needed 
Some weekend availability required 
Starting at $16.00 hour

Reports to: Site Director 

JOB SUMMARY 

This position is well-trained in all SCRAP departments including but not limited to the reuse supply/retail store, the educational department, and recovery/donations duties. They will be primarily scheduled in the reuse supply/retail store and educational programming in any given week dependent upon the needs of the organization. This position is responsible for providing excellent customer service in a welcoming environment and receiving, processing, and managing high quality and safe creative reuse materials for retail. This role will be a liaison and cultivate partnerships between SCRAP’s educational programming and their local community. Additionally, if needed this role will be able to provide fast paced sorting and organization and/or physical support to the donations department and will be expected to engage in frequent heavy lifting over the course of a shift. The Site Executive Director or designee will determine the scheduling needs for maximum efficiency.   

SCRAP’s mission is to inspire creative reuse and environmentally sustainable behavior by providing educational programs and affordable materials to the community. To fulfill our mission, SCRAP operates a donation-based creative reuse store and education programming. 

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

Reuse and Donations Operations 

• Providing excellent customer service 

• Ensuring customers are greeted professionally, warmly and helpfully 

• Retail cashiering 

• Opening/closing store as scheduled 

• Inventory pricing 

• Sort, stock, and organize sections 

• Maintaining a clean and orderly shopping environment 

• Assisting with display and promotions 

• Offering creative advice as requested 

• Maintaining high quality standards for handling materials 

• Helping direct volunteers to ensure safe and efficient use of time 

• Providing excellent customer relations while receiving materials 

• Staying current on what materials are accepted  

• Using appropriate protocol in processing received materials 

• Using appropriate pricing protocol as directed by the Site Executive Director or designee 

• Stock items according to accepted protocol onto the floor or back stock area 

• Working with Reuse Supply Manager to develop efficient systems for materials processing 

• Maintaining high quality standards for handling materials 

• Help direct materials volunteers to ensure safe and efficient processing 

Other Duties:  

• Special projects and other duties as needed and assigned by Site Director or Education Director 

Education Operations:  

• Lead, manage, and teach SCRAP Educational Programs including Field Trips (at SCRAP), SCRAP at School(s), Teacher Trainings, Camp SCRAP, Birthday Parties, Scouting Outings, and other educational activities in/from the creative reuse center. 

• Lead/Join Workshops and Events - Host family-friendly craft workshops at SCRAP or other places in the community (Craft workshops, Crafternoons, Craft & Drink, etc.).  

• Maintain an organized and ready-to-use SCRAP studio space. 

• Creating and developing a new or rotating set of lessons and projects both to continually engage return students and to reflect updates in inventory, sustainability best practices, and student aptitude.    

• Outreach - Promote education program offerings to schools, educators, and the community.  

• Safety - Complete Incident Report per protocol and ensure compliance with safety guidelines for use of education space and all activities for participants and leaders.  

Qualifications: 

• Ability to communicate effectively in multiple formats 

• Great organizational skills 

• Ability to communicate effectively to a large group  

• Positive classroom management skills  

• Art/creative experience with a variety of media  

• Ability to lead art projects with students of varying ability  

• Availability to work weekends/school breaks as needed for SCRAP events 

• Demonstrated reliability and dedication in the workplace 

Preferred Qualities/Abilities: 

• One year experience working or volunteering with children  

• Current driver's license and a vehicle to aid in transporting education materials to and from schools and other settings. 

• University credits in education, childhood development, school administration, art therapy, or a related field. 

• Lesson planning experience.  

Working Conditions:

• A high frequency of unassisted heavy moving of items (up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis per shift) 

• Position oneself to bending, stooping and climbing 

• Being in a stationary position (standing, sitting or walking) for extended periods of times 

• Weekend schedule availability

• Must have a commitment to reuse and some knowledge of the reuse sector 

• Must have a passion for arts accessibility and removing barriers to participation in creation  

• Must be capable of physical labor, fast paced movement, standing, heavy lifting, and materials processing with a variety of materials and types of material donations 

• Highly organized with regards to inventory, materials, and sorting 

Expectations of all SCRAP Staff:  

Work as part of a team with other staff, volunteers, and programs to fulfill SCRAP’s mission; communicate effectively and focus on good stakeholder relations; greet stakeholders professionally, warmly and helpfully; stay current with the environmental services community and sources of information and referrals for callers and customers; stay current with developments in reuse and recycling, including legislation and availability of recyclable materials markets; when necessary, say “no” tactfully and suggest other community resources to meet appropriate needs; and is an ambassador for SCRAP in the community.
