It’s been a tough year for so many of us, and the holiday season can bring additional stressors and difficulties. Art, crafting, and creativity are inspiring outlets to help us cope with complex, stressful, and difficult situations, and this year we may need to be especially creative when celebrating the holidays safely. If you are thinking about unique gift ideas for this year, think about SCRAP Creative Reuse and these opportunities to make this season special, even if we are apart.
Did you know that SCRAP is hosting a peer-to-peer end-of-the-year fundraising campaign? That’s right! We are working to raise $35,000 by the end of 2020 to help sustain our National Network of Creative Reuse Centers and our mission to inspire creative reuse and environmentally sustainable behavior by providing educational programs and affordable materials to the community.
Not only do your monetary donations make a positive impact on our organization, but you can inspire others to join your team and fundraise, too! The team that raises the most donations can win $75 a month store credit for 2021 at the SCRAP closest to their home! Check out information about our locations and the SCRAP nearest you!
That monthly store credit is A LOT of SCRAP! You could start a team in someone’s name and if you win, then give the gift of a year of free SCRAP to your lucky crafty friend or family member. If you don’t want to risk the competition, you can still donate to SCRAP in someone’s name, or buy them a gift card to SCRAP so they can shop and craft to their heart’s content!

Of course, many of us still want to give gifts to our loved ones, and maybe we have been exceptionally crafty with so much time at home and need somewhere for all those goodies to go! There are tons of handmade gift ideas that can be made with materials from SCRAP. You can sew or knit someone a gift, you can paint a picture or portrait to give someone, the kiddos can make robots and dioramas that they give as gifts, and so many more creative gifts that you can make for those special folks in your life.
At SCRAP Creative Reuse, we want you to think about handmade and reuse when it comes to cards and gift boxes, too! Creating a handmade card with materials from our collage kits, or putting gifts in handmade and decorated gift boxes, can add that extra special touch to show you care. Tag us at your local SCRAP and let us see those creative reuse handmade gifts and presents!
With the winter holidays becoming another season of distanced celebrations this year, we are finding safe alternatives to celebrate and spend time with our loved ones. For many, the normal parties, experiences, and family visits during the holidays will be absent or greatly changed. Creating fun alternative experiences can turn these unusual times into opportunities for positive memories and forming new traditions. Check out your local SCRAP store and stock up on some of their kits, creative reuse and crafting supplies, and plan out some creative reuse experiences to enjoy with your household. You could even set up a time to enjoy these experiences virtually with those you may not be able to visit in person this year.
Here’s a couple ideas!
Some empty containers or old shelves to reuse, some labels and markers, and a spot to put it, and you can start to process and save your own reuse materials like plastics, craft supplies, fabric scraps, and other items that you can divert from going to the landfill or recycling center.
SCRAP Creative Reuse Centers create fun and interesting kits that have a variety of reuse materials, general instructions, and a little bit of inspiration – all packaged up for you to explore at home! Build a robot, sew a plushie, craft a diorama, and make a collage! Check out some of our Fall Craft Ideas.
What are you going to do with your leftover cardboard boxes, extra packaging, old political signs, and holiday gift or treat containers you may have? Think of ways to reuse those materials before quickly disposing of them! These items can be reused for craft projects, repurposed, or turned into something new out of old parts. Don’t look at it as waste, look at is as an opportunity to get creative with sustainability!
